We harvest the roots during the summertime and dry them in the shadow to preserve the pigments. Once the roots are dry we powder it. 

Persian Madder- Rubia Tinctorum L. Its homeland is the Mediterranean region. It is also grown a lot in the Western and Central Anatolian regions. The dye is prepared with Alizarin and Parparin materials obtained from the roots of Persian madder. It is known to be the first plant used in yarn dyeing.

Color effect: Purple, dark red, apricot color, bright red.

Mordanting: 

Most commonly alum mordant is used with Persian madder root powder.

How to dye with Persian madder root powder:

Madder is dyed at 35-100% WOF for a medium to a dark depth of shade. Madder develops to its deepest and richest reds in hard water – water containing calcium and magnesium is ideal. If the water is soft add calcium carbonate. Add dye material to dye pot and cover with water. Bring up to about 60ºC (140ºF) and hold for an hour. Add fibers and continue cooking for another 1-2 hours.
